Ingredient Glossary

At Eagle & Crane Apothecary, we believe you should know exactly what goes on your skin. Here's a plain-language guide to every ingredient we use — where it comes from and why it earns a place in our formulas.

Activated Charcoal

Derived from coconut shells or wood, activated charcoal is known for its ability to draw out impurities and excess oil. It gives our bars a striking appearance and is especially popular for oily or acne-prone skin.

Argan Oil

Cold-pressed from the kernels of the Moroccan argan tree, argan oil is rich in vitamin E, essential fatty acids, and antioxidants. Often called "liquid gold," it absorbs quickly without greasiness and is deeply nourishing for all skin types.

Beef Tallow

Rendered from grass-fed cattle fat, beef tallow has been used in skincare for centuries. Its fatty acid profile closely mirrors human skin, making it exceptionally nourishing and easily absorbed. It creates a rich, creamy lather and is deeply moisturizing — especially for dry or sensitive skin.

Castor Oil

Pressed from castor beans, castor oil is a humectant that draws moisture to the skin. In soap, it boosts lather and adds a silky, conditioning quality. We use it in small amounts for its powerful effect on bar performance.

Cocoa Butter

Extracted from cacao beans, cocoa butter is a rich, stable fat that melts at skin temperature. It creates a hard, long-lasting bar, adds a subtle natural scent, and is deeply moisturizing — particularly beneficial for dry skin and helping to improve skin elasticity.

Coconut Oil

Cold-pressed from fresh coconut meat, coconut oil is a cornerstone of cold-process soapmaking. It produces a hard bar with a rich, bubbly lather and excellent cleansing properties. We use organic coconut oil to ensure purity and quality.

Essential Oils

Steam-distilled or cold-pressed directly from plants, essential oils provide natural fragrance and therapeutic benefits. We source our essential oils from reputable suppliers and use them at skin-safe concentrations. Each product listing specifies which essential oils are used.

Fragrance Oil

Some of our scents use cosmetic-grade fragrance oils — carefully selected blends that are skin-safe and phthalate-free. We always disclose when fragrance oil is used so you can make an informed choice.

Goat Milk

Sourced from dairy goats, goat milk is naturally rich in lactic acid, vitamins A, B2, B6, B12, C, D, and E, and fatty acids. It gently exfoliates, soothes irritation, and supports the skin's natural moisture barrier. It's one of the most skin-compatible ingredients in our lineup.

Hemp Seed Oil

Cold-pressed from hemp seeds, hemp seed oil is rich in omega-3 and omega-6 fatty acids in an ideal ratio for skin health. It's non-comedogenic, balancing for oily skin, and deeply nourishing for dry skin — making it suitable for virtually all skin types.

Kaolin Clay

A fine, white clay that is one of the gentlest clays available. Kaolin softens lather, adds a silky slip, and is mild enough for sensitive and dry skin types. It's one of our favorite additions for a luxurious bar feel.

Mango Butter

Extracted from the seed kernels of the mango fruit, mango butter is a rich emollient packed with vitamins A, C, and E. It melts beautifully into skin, provides lasting moisture, and contributes to a hard, conditioning bar with a silky feel.

Mica

A naturally occurring mineral, mica is used to add shimmer and color to our soaps. We source cosmetic-grade mica that is skin-safe and approved for use in rinse-off products.

Natural Clays

Clays like kaolin, French green, and rose clay are used for their gentle detoxifying and skin-softening properties. They add a silky feel to lather and are suitable for all skin types, including sensitive skin.

Olive Oil

One of the oldest skincare ingredients in the world, olive oil is rich in oleic acid and antioxidants. It conditions and softens skin, contributes to a long-lasting bar, and is gentle enough for the most sensitive skin types.

Palm Oil (Certified Sustainable)

We use only RSPO-certified sustainable palm oil, sourced from suppliers committed to responsible land use and fair labor practices. Palm oil contributes to a hard bar with a stable, creamy lather. Our commitment to certified sustainable sourcing means you can feel good about this ingredient.

Shea Butter

Extracted from the nuts of the African shea tree, shea butter is packed with vitamins A, E, and F. It's deeply moisturizing, anti-inflammatory, and helps protect the skin's natural barrier. It gives our bars a creamy, skin-loving quality.

Sunflower Oil

Cold-pressed from sunflower seeds, sunflower oil is lightweight, non-greasy, and rich in vitamin E and linoleic acid. It's highly skin-compatible, absorbs easily, and helps maintain the skin's natural barrier — making it a wonderful conditioning addition to our bars.

Sweet Almond Oil

Pressed from dried almond kernels, sweet almond oil is a gentle, nourishing oil rich in oleic and linoleic acids. It softens skin, improves complexion, and adds a silky quality to lather. It's particularly well-suited for sensitive and dry skin types.

Titanium Dioxide

A naturally occurring mineral pigment used to create bright white color in soap. We use cosmetic-grade titanium dioxide that is safe for skin contact in rinse-off products.
